Susannah Kuppers,

LCSW, LCAS

(she/her/hers)

Sometimes what we need most is to be seen, heard, and appreciated just as we are.  Through my own personal counseling and my professional training, I’ve witnessed the power of healing through connection with another and strive to bring this to my work as a therapist.  When we are able to be vulnerable with another person, to be truly seen and heard it can be liberating. I believe that with a strong therapeutic relationship with an emphasis on trust and safety, therapy can create the conditions for this healing.

I have deep roots in Western North Carolina and though I moved around as a child in a military family and briefly as an adult, I have always been drawn back to the mountains and Appalachian community.  The strong sense of connection and community has been integral to my own healing process and strongly influenced my focus on connection in my therapeutic work. I am a Feminist and social justice advocate, striving to challenge oppressive systems in my life and work. It was these values of justice, empowerment, collaboration, and respect for diverse identities that drew me towards the field of social work and help to sustain me in my practice.

I am a certified EMDR therapist and am passionate about supporting people through the process of healing from past events that can keep us stuck. I work from a person-centered, attachment, and strengths-based approach and strive to be collaborative to build on your inner wisdom and resilience. I integrate therapeutic techniques from feminist-empowerment therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and harm reduction approaches. Above all, my approach is relational and trauma-informed.  I enjoy working with a variety of concerns including trauma, anxiety, depression, identity exploration, attachment wounds, emerging adulthood, and substance use.
